Texas to waive toll fees for disabled veterans on state toll roads

GasBuddy Blog -- In a gesture to honor the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who have made great personal sacrifices to ensure our freedom and protection, the Texas Transportation Commission has approved granting free passage for select veterans on state operated toll roads.

The decision will benefit Texas resident veterans who are either disabled or recipients of the Purple Heart and/or Congressional Medal of Honor. Statewide the number of veterans who qualify to drive free of charge on these roads is estimated at 160,666.

TxDOT says most toll roads are run by regional toll authorities or county and municipal authorities and for privileges to be extended there would require actions enacted by those regional branches of government...

Joliet: still unfair to those who didn't get any service recognition (i.e. Purple Heart or Congressional Medal of Honor). There are lots of servicemen and women out there who got injured who didn't get a Purple Heart.

Just as a broken clock is right twice a day, the government does do something right occasionally.

What about waiving tool fees for ALL disabled people, regardless of whether they have been in the military or not?

Texas to waive toll fees for disabled veterans on State toll roads? - Texas can afford it (i.e. Crude Oil production income - along with many other states that produces and refines oil too.)! Other states have a hard time maintaining their roads and bridges to let a little tax money slip by and will charge their veterans, disabled veterans and all other travelers the full charge due. That’s Not right for all veterans and it should Not be tolerated. The veteran should have a pass/card assigned to him so no matter what vehicle he is in - that vehicle goes for free!
Sometimes 'It's A Good Thing' to live in a certain place or state, you'll never know what will happen next! Replace that star with a heart....
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

slgas asked "But if you're a veteran living in another Texas city, such as El Paso.... why not them, too?"

There are no toll roads in El Paso (yet)

Lets hope that the other necessary approvals are done quickly and this is not just another Public Relations trick to make you think the Texas DOT is doing good things.

But if you're a veteran living in another Texas city, such as El Paso, Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Beaumont, Amarillo, Waco, Galveston, etc.... why not them, too?
