Fuel scarce, East Coast struggles to recover

Reuters -- Rescuers searched flooded homes for survivors, drivers lined up for hours to get scarce gasoline and millions remained without power on Thursday as New York City and nearby towns struggled to recover from one of the biggest storms to hit the United States.

New York subway trains crawled back to limited service after being shut down since Sunday, but the lower half of Manhattan still lacked power and surrounding areas such as Staten Island, the New Jersey shore and the city of Hoboken remained crippled from a record storm surge and flooding.

At least 95 people died in the "superstorm" that ravaged the Northeastern United States on Monday. Officials said the number could rise as rescuers searched house-by-house in coastal towns.

I am surprised the price of gasoline hasn't gone way up, nation-wide, which usually happens during or after a storm.

Agree with a few others... Seems reasonable to assume that during the ramp up to Sandy's arrival that there was a few "Top 10 things you need to do to Prepare for Sandy" on local TV. One of those things should have been "FILL your Vehicles and Gas Cans with Fuel" along with setting aside enough Water and Food for several days...

Raiding the Grocery Store/Gas Station at the last minute just makes you look bad.

There is lots of fuel its just that the delivery trucks cant be filled without power and the samr goes for gas stations you need power for the pumps to work.

rite, a lot of the gas shortage is no power with which to pump gas and the ones with power are selling out, due to no place else to go..

The problem with gas shortage is nothing more than most of the stations can't pump gas without electric.

"And Mitt wants to abolish FEMA, why?"

Because it appeals to people who think like this post...

"Hopefully this convinces some people in those areas that they should start considering self-sufficiency instead of dependency."

NashGas, to not build in a flood plain requires common sense which has proven to be in short supply.

They have no power to download fuel from ships. The unions in some areas are turning down outside help to restore power. What a mess.

These people had plenty of warning and should have fueled up their vehicles and fuel cans long before the storm hit. Even if they hadn't filled their gas cans they could siphon it out of their cars if needed.

ClarkSC distribution of gasoline is one thing that FEMA is not allowed to touch any more thanks to Sen DeMint who inserted a little rider in FEMA's budget after Katrina. Can't interfere with private enterprise making a profit. THAN YOU SC. Otherwise you would have US Army tank trucks headed up I-95 from Philadelphia just as Gen Russel Honore did after Katrina.

And Mitt wants to abolish FEMA, why?
