New 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 features aluminum engine, skips g

MLive.com -- Ford released details Monday on its new 2011 Ford Shelby GT500, its first iteration of the classic performance car that isn't considered a gas-guzzler by the federal government.

Ford said drivers can still expect power and performance out of the Shelby Mustang, which has a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine that kicks out 550 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. However, the new engine is crafted out of aluminum, rather than cast-iron, which makes the new Shelby 102 pounds lighter than the previous edition, according to Ford.

That weight drop allows the 2011 Shelby to get 23 m.p.g. highway, compared to 22 m.p.g. for the previous Shelby Mustang. That means this will be the first Mustang that will not be subject to the government's Gas Guzzler Tax.

this is how progress is made. 2-3 mm down to 15 microns. saving a little weight here, less friction/drag there. that's how its done, in high end, cutting edge, niche market cars. like mustang gt, corvette, tesla and fisker.
eventually you have a vehicle with these features, just like the anti locking brake system 85% of you have on your vehicle today.

Most of you commentors are missing the point.
This is a good "muscle" car, that got a face lift, got a bit faster, and still got "better" mpg's.

Yes I'd agree that the numbers maybe fudged a bit, yet the Camaro and the Mustang are at war again.
Remember the last 70's early 80's wars??
This is just great.

And yes I don't believe anyone driving this car will get 23 mpg. Most likely it will be 15 mpg most of the time, but yet it's not the commuting car for the masses. This is a special car and built for special purposes.
Why do you think they make Porshes, Lambrogini, and the rest of the "unaffordability fast" cars?

Someone will buy these just for the sake of having one and the ability to go fast.
The same way that they are giving out big bonuses to the investment bankers, yet I am not getting any bonus.

So yes, I can't afford this car, yet it is great that they still have a market fot this kind of car!

"Ford released details ... its first iteration of the classic performance car that isn't considered a gas-guzzler by the federal government"

Really? I would be willing to bet the mpg figures are massaged to MAKE it fit! Who decides?

I drove a Shelby Omni, and it would go like hell. You can keep your V8s.

I hope the aluminum engine stands up as well as the cast-iron one, but I'm positive it will be another great car for Ford. It is a thing of Beauuty, for those of us that appreciate the sports car look.

The new engine is crafted out of aluminum, rather than cast-iron, which makes the new Shelby 102 pounds lighter than the previous edition. The 2011 Shelby get s 23 m.p.g. highway! Build vehicles with high MPG, a reasonable price, are ‘multi fueled,’ very reliable and not some Shelby gas guzzler.

Wouldn't mind test-driving one to see if they're REALLY worth of the "Shelby GT500" emblem.

It seems to me that any car with gasoline consumption resulting in less than 35MPG is a gas guzzler. This may include my Toyota Corolla with a five speed.

Nope Genefo1 - I drive and have driven only cars that can corner as well as accelerate and not some supermodified Ford Pinto.

They would not do well on the EU super highways like the Autobahn. The basic BMW 328i with a 6 would leave them sitting at... Gas stations would love them.

Gas guzzler is something we do not need and just another way for the government to screw us over.

As I buy sensible cars, I didn't even know there was a gas guzzler tax! Either way, 23 mpg for a car is crappy mileage. No thanks. (But I find the concept of the muscle car so mind numbing I try not to think about it. The car is a way of getting from Point A to Point B, NOT a fashion statement).

I can't understand the point of a 550 horsepower engine in a street vehicle. They're living in a bygone era.

supermodified, apparently derKraut never rode in anything like the 1968 GT500KR. If he did, he would understand Ford's marketing strategy with this latest iteration of it.

Shows Ford has learnt absolutely nothing about current market conditions.
