Trash to gas - and saving cash in DeKalb

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- DeKalb County’s bragging rights for being green gets a boost this week when the county opens a different kind of gas station.

The station on Clevemont Road pumps compressed natural gas — the same sort of gas that heats homes and lights up stoves — from methane captured and processed at the county-owned landfill.

The green isn’t just environmental bluster. DeKalb projects it will make $1 million a year selling the gas, known as CNG.

And for people able to fuel up their Honda Civics or Dodge Rams that run on CNG, there will be some bragging, too. The price for a gallon of the fuel at DeKalb’s station: $2.10.

“You tie the environmental savings and financial savings together and it’s hard to come up with a reason not to do it,” said County Commissioner Kat . . .

How long will it take to repay the $9 million federal stimulus money? Is the facility operating at a profit or are the Dekalb county taxpayers subsidizing its operation? How does the fuel cost per mile compare to gasoline or diesel? Not enough information here...

“Even if every county garbage truck ran on CNG, the station would have a half million gallons for sale, every year.”

Wow, I had no idea garbage could produce that much gas. Sounds like a worthwhile project.

I feel like the amount of money it would take to convert a car to accepting CNG, wouldn't be worth the savings.

Amazing, back in the day no one cared about land fills.
I remember driving past a place we called Mt. Trashmore.
The Palace, Detroit Pistons venue is within eyespit from it.
Don't think it was ever a captured resource. But is now a major area that now houses lots of office space, etc. Progress.

Oil companies don't want to put Natural Gas in their stations to compete with the gasoline they have to refine.

FUVO is just $1/gal and goes farther (about 90% of the MPG of diesel). It is used in diesels when the temperature is above freezing which is all of the year in Atlanta and its surroundings.
